Not Every Cycle Should Be Repeated

Most Clinics Will Tell You to Try Again, We Ask If You Should

By Dr Lynn Burmeister.

After an IVF cycle hasn’t worked, most people are left with the same question.
“What comes next?”

For many patients, the answer is presented quickly, another cycle. And sometimes, that is the right step. But it should not be automatic.

When IVF Starts to Feel Like a Cycle You’re Repeating

Many of the patients I meet have already been through treatment. They’ve followed every instruction, attended every appointment, and done everything they could. And yet, they’re still not where they hoped to be. In most cases, nothing has gone “wrong”. What is often missing is a moment to step back and look at the bigger picture.

IVF should not feel like something you keep repeating without pause.

At some point, it needs to feel deliberate, not just ongoing.

IVF Is Not Just About Persistence

It’s often said that IVF is a numbers game, that continuing treatment will eventually lead to success. Persistence can be important. But IVF is not simply about doing more cycles.

Each cycle leaves behind important clues, how your body responded, how the eggs developed, what happened in the lab, and how the embryos progressed. Those details are not incidental. They are what should guide the next decision.

The Conversation That Needs to Happen

After a cycle hasn’t worked, the focus often shifts straight to timing. “When can we go again?” But a more useful question is: “Is the same approach still the right one?”

Sometimes it is. But sometimes there are subtle indicators that a different strategy may be more appropriate. These are not always obvious at first glance, but they can be significant. If they are not explored, it can feel like you are moving forward without a clear change in direction.

Why a Doctor-Led Model Changes the Approach

At No.1 Fertility, being doctor-led influences every decision we make. Your care is not guided by a fixed pathway. It is reviewed carefully, based on your history, your results, and your individual response to treatment. The focus is not on what is standard.
It is on what is most appropriate for you. That distinction matters, especially when decisions are not straightforward.

If You’re Early in Your IVF Journey

This is something many people only recognise in hindsight. The decisions made early on can shape the entire course of treatment. Taking the time to get the approach right from the beginning can help reduce unnecessary cycles, cost, and emotional strain. It can also help avoid falling into a pattern of repeating treatment without a clear rationale.

If You’ve Already Had an Unsuccessful Cycle

An unsuccessful cycle does not mean something has been done incorrectly. Even when care is appropriate, IVF does not always lead to pregnancy. What it does provide is information. Sometimes that supports continuing with a similar approach. Other times, it points towards adjusting. What matters is that the next step is informed by what has already been learned.

When You’re Left with More Questions Than Answers

It’s common for patients to feel uncertain after treatment. You may have been through a cycle, but still feel unclear about why certain decisions were made or what could change next. That uncertainty can be difficult to carry.

At No.1 Fertility, we place a strong emphasis on clarity. We take the time to review your results, explain your options, and ensure you understand the reasoning behind each recommendation.

A More Considered Way Forward

Fertility treatment should not feel like repetition without direction. It should feel thoughtful, informed, and tailored to your situation. Because IVF is not just about continuing treatment. It is about making the right decisions at the right time.
