Why Dr Jonathan Nettle Brings More Than IVF to Fertility Care

When you choose a fertility specialist, you are trusting someone with much more than an IVF cycle.

You want a doctor who understands fertility, but also understands the reasons pregnancy may not be happening in the first place. Someone who can look at your history, investigate properly, explain your options and make decisions based on you rather than simply following the same pathway for every patient.

That breadth of experience is one of the things Dr Jonathan Nettle brings to No.1 Fertility.

Jonathan is a fertility specialist, obstetrician and gynaecologist. He graduated in Medicine and Surgery from Monash University with Honours, completed postgraduate study in surgical anatomy at the University of Melbourne and later undertook specialist training in obstetrics and gynaecology at the Royal Women’s Hospital. He also holds postgraduate qualifications in reproductive medicine and today continues to work as a consultant at the Royal Women’s Hospital.

It means fertility is only one part of the reproductive medicine picture he understands.

Before IVF, understand why

Not everybody who sees a fertility specialist needs IVF.

Jonathan’s fertility practice begins with trying to understand what may be affecting a person’s ability to conceive. That can include ovulation, ovarian reserve, hormone levels, the uterus and fallopian tubes, sperm factors and underlying gynaecological conditions. His fertility services include assessment and investigation, ovulation induction, IUI, IVF, ICSI, PGT and egg freezing or fertility preservation.

Sometimes IVF will be the right next step. Sometimes another treatment or further investigation will make more sense.

At No.1 Fertility, we think that distinction matters.

IVF should not begin with the assumption that every patient needs the same thing. Age, ovarian reserve, sperm quality, previous pregnancies, previous IVF treatment and the way someone has responded to treatment before can all form part of the discussion.

Jonathan’s job is to put those pieces together and work out the most appropriate way forward.

Fertility and gynaecology often overlap

One of the advantages of Jonathan’s training is that he isn’t looking at fertility in isolation.

He also cares for women with conditions including endometriosis, fibroids, adenomyosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome, ovarian cysts, pelvic pain, irregular periods and recurrent miscarriage. He has training in advanced laparoscopic and minimally invasive gynaecological surgery.

For fertility patients, that can be important.

Sometimes the question isn’t simply, “Should I do IVF?”

The question may be whether there is something else affecting fertility that needs to be understood first, whether surgery has a role, whether IVF is the better option, or how different pieces of a patient’s reproductive history fit together.

Having a specialist who works across fertility and gynaecology allows those conversations to happen together.

When IVF is the right treatment

When IVF is recommended, Jonathan manages the medical side of treatment while working closely with the wider No.1 Fertility team.

That includes planning stimulation, reviewing how a patient responds, making decisions around egg collection and fertilisation, and considering what has been learnt from previous treatment where applicable.

IVF is never the work of one person. Behind every cycle is a team of fertility nurses, embryologists, scientists and other clinical staff. But the relationship with your fertility specialist remains central because that is the doctor helping you make decisions as treatment progresses.

Jonathan has been part of No.1 Fertility since 2019, and his work here combines fertility medicine with his broader experience in obstetrics, gynaecology and reproductive health.

And what happens when IVF works?

This is another part of Jonathan’s practice that is a little different.

Jonathan is also an obstetrician.

For patients who become pregnant through fertility treatment and would like him to continue looking after them, Jonathan can provide care during pregnancy and through to birth.

For some people, that continuity means a lot.

The doctor who knows how long you have been trying, what investigations you have had and what was involved in achieving the pregnancy can remain your doctor once you are pregnant.

But there is no requirement to do that.

You can see Jonathan purely for fertility treatment at No.1 Fertility and then choose your own obstetrician or maternity service once you are pregnant.

The choice remains yours.

One doctor who understands both sides of the journey

Fertility treatment is ultimately about trying to achieve a healthy pregnancy and, hopefully, take home a baby.

Jonathan’s background means he understands the journey from both directions: the challenges that can prevent pregnancy from happening and the care that may be needed once it does.

For some patients, IVF will be part of that journey. For others it won’t.

What matters is having someone who can look at the whole picture, explain what they are seeing and help you make informed decisions about what comes next.

That is the kind of fertility care Jonathan provides at No.1 Fertility.

If you have been trying to conceive, are considering IVF, have had fertility treatment before or simply want to understand your options, you can book an appointment with Dr Jonathan Nettle at No.1 Fertility.
