Why No.1 Fertility Is Different

When we started No.1 Fertility, the goal was never simply to build another IVF clinic. We wanted to create a place where patients felt known, where doctors remained closely involved in their care, where the science was taken seriously and where people never felt as though they were moving through a system.

Fertility treatment can be exciting, overwhelming, emotional and, at times, frustrating. It can also become very technical very quickly. There are blood tests, scans, medications, egg collections, embryo development, genetics, transfers and decisions that sometimes need to be made at short notice. For patients, it can feel like a lot to take in, which is why the way care is delivered matters just as much as the treatment itself.

At No.1 Fertility, we have always believed fertility care should feel personal. Every patient comes to us with a different history, different circumstances and different hopes for the future, so it makes sense that treatment should not feel identical for everyone.

Doctor-led care still matters

No.1 Fertility was founded by fertility specialist Dr Lynn Burmeister, and being doctor-led remains an important part of how we operate.

Fertility medicine is rarely straightforward. Two patients of the same age can have very different medical histories, ovarian reserves, previous treatment experiences and reproductive goals. One person may be coming to us for their first fertility consultation, while another may already have been through several IVF cycles and is looking for a fresh perspective.

For us, doctor-led care means taking the time to understand that history before deciding what comes next. Sometimes that means IVF. Sometimes it means more investigation, a change in treatment approach, fertility preservation or simply taking the time to explain why a particular recommendation is being made. Patients should understand their treatment rather than feeling as though decisions are simply happening around them.

There is a lot happening behind the laboratory doors

One of the things patients do not always see is just how important the embryology laboratory is to their treatment.

After an egg collection, much of the next stage happens behind the scenes. Eggs are assessed, fertilisation is monitored, embryos are cultured and scientists are watching closely at every stage. These are careful processes carried out by highly trained embryologists who are dealing with something incredibly important to the people on the other side of the laboratory door.

At No.1 Fertility, our doctors and scientists work closely together because we do not see the laboratory as separate from a patient’s medical care. What happens in the lab can help inform conversations about previous cycles, embryo development and what may need to be considered next.

Good fertility care is not about one piece of technology or one piece of equipment. It is about experienced people, well-run systems, careful monitoring and strong communication between the clinical and scientific teams.

Sometimes a second opinion changes the plan. Sometimes it simply brings clarity.

We see many patients who come to No.1 Fertility after having treatment somewhere else. Some have been through several IVF cycles and want to know whether there is anything they should be doing differently. Others simply want another specialist to look at their history before deciding what to do next.

We think second opinions are an important part of fertility medicine. That does not mean the treatment someone received previously was wrong. Fertility is complex and different doctors may look at the same history and ask different questions. Sometimes there may be another option worth considering, while in other cases a second opinion may reassure someone that their current treatment plan makes sense.

Either way, patients often leave with a better understanding of where they are and why.

Fertility care can begin well before IVF

We also want people to understand that fertility medicine is not only about helping someone who is trying to have a baby today.

Egg freezing and sperm freezing have become an important part of fertility care because there are many reasons someone may want or need to think about preserving their fertility. It may be because they are not ready to start a family, or because medical treatment, surgery or a diagnosis could affect their future fertility.

These can be difficult conversations, particularly when fertility preservation is happening because of cancer or another serious medical condition. They can also be empowering conversations when someone simply wants to understand their options for the future.

We are careful not to present fertility preservation as a guarantee, because it is not. What it can sometimes do is preserve an option that may become very important later in life, and patients deserve clear, realistic information before making that decision.

The people are still what patients remember

We can talk about science, facilities and treatment protocols all day, but when patients tell us about their experience, they often talk about people.

They remember the nurse who took their call when they were anxious, the scientist who explained what was happening with their embryos, the sonographer who made an uncomfortable appointment feel easier or the receptionist who knew their name when they arrived. Those moments matter, and they are often what makes care feel personal.

No.1 Fertility has grown since we first opened, but we have worked hard to hold onto that sense that patients are people first. Our doctors, nurses, embryologists, sonographers, counsellors, patient support staff and administration teams all play a part in that experience.

No one comes to a fertility clinic because they want another complicated medical journey. They come because they want help, answers and the best possible understanding of what their options are.

That is probably the simplest way to explain what makes No.1 Fertility different. We are doctor-led, but we are also very much a team. We care deeply about the science, but we never want patients to feel lost in it. We believe in second opinions, honest conversations and giving people information they can actually understand. We take fertility preservation seriously, and we know that sometimes the smallest interaction with a member of our team can make a difficult day feel a little easier.

As No.1 Fertility continues to grow, those are the things we want to hold onto.

Because fertility care should always feel personal.
