Meet Dr Paul Berlund: Looking Beyond IVF, Focusing on You
If there is one misconception I encounter more than any other, it is that fertility treatment always begins with IVF.
IVF has transformed reproductive medicine and helped millions of people around the world build their families. Because of its success, many people understandably assume it is the first step whenever pregnancy does not happen.
In reality, every fertility journey begins somewhere else.
Before discussing treatment, I want to understand you. Every patient arrives with a different medical history, different experiences and different hopes for the future. My role is not simply to recommend a procedure. It is to understand why pregnancy has not happened and to develop a plan that reflects your individual circumstances.
That approach has guided me throughout my career as an Obstetrician, Gynaecologist and Fertility Specialist, and it continues to shape every consultation I have today.
More Than a Fertility Specialist
One of the things I value most about my work is its variety. No two days are ever the same.
I may spend the morning helping a woman investigate painful periods that have affected her quality of life for years, then meet a couple seeking fertility advice before finishing the day caring for an expectant mother or performing surgery.
Although these situations appear different, they are often closely connected.
Women’s health is not divided into separate chapters. Fertility, gynaecology and pregnancy all influence one another. Looking at the bigger picture often provides answers that might otherwise be overlooked, while allowing treatment to be planned with both immediate and long-term health in mind.
Many patients appreciate having one doctor who understands that broader journey. Whether someone first comes to see me because of endometriosis, fertility concerns, recurrent miscarriage or pregnancy care, my goal remains the same: to provide thoughtful, individualised care based on careful assessment rather than assumptions.
Looking Beyond IVF
Every patient has a unique story, which is why I never believe in following a standard pathway.
Our first consultation is about understanding the whole picture. We discuss your medical history, menstrual health, previous pregnancies, lifestyle, family history and any fertility treatment you may already have experienced. Just as importantly, we talk about your goals and what matters most to you.
Only then can we decide on the most appropriate next step.
Fertility can be influenced by many factors including egg quality, sperm health, ovulation, hormone function, the uterus, fallopian tubes, age and underlying medical conditions. Sometimes there is one clear explanation. More often, several factors combine to reduce the chances of pregnancy.
Understanding those factors allows treatment to be guided by evidence rather than assumption.
For some patients, IVF offers the best chance of success. Others may benefit from treating endometriosis, managing hormonal conditions, addressing male factor infertility or considering less invasive approaches before moving to IVF.
Good fertility care is not about recommending the biggest treatment. It is about recommending the right treatment at the right time.
Treating the Whole Person
One of the most important lessons I have learnt throughout my career is that fertility challenges extend far beyond medicine.
Behind every blood test, scan and investigation is a person whose life has often been affected in ways that others cannot see. Fertility concerns can influence relationships, careers, finances and emotional wellbeing. Many patients tell me they feel as though life has been placed on hold while they search for answers.
That is why I believe listening is just as important as diagnosing.
Medical language can be overwhelming, particularly when discussing ovarian reserve, embryo development or pregnancy risks. I believe patients deserve clear explanations, honest advice and enough time to ask questions so they feel confident about the decisions we make together.
My aim is for every patient to leave a consultation understanding not only what we recommend, but why we recommend it.
Experience Across Women’s Health
My practice includes fertility medicine, gynaecology and obstetrics, and I believe each area strengthens the care I provide in the others.
Women may seek help for endometriosis, adenomyosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts, heavy menstrual bleeding, recurrent miscarriage or difficulty conceiving. Others are considering egg freezing or planning pregnancy later in life.
These conditions rarely exist in isolation.
By understanding the full spectrum of women’s health, I can develop treatment plans that address today’s concerns while also considering future fertility, pregnancy and long-term wellbeing.
Medicine continues to evolve rapidly, and fertility care has advanced enormously over the past two decades. While I remain committed to incorporating new evidence and emerging treatments, some principles never change. Patients deserve honest communication, careful decision-making and recommendations based on sound medical evidence rather than trends.
Why I Chose No.1 Fertility
I joined No.1 Fertility because I wanted to work alongside people who share the same philosophy of care.
From my first conversations with the team, it was clear that every decision begins with the patient. There is a genuine commitment to understanding each person’s circumstances, working collaboratively to solve complex problems and ensuring patients feel supported throughout their treatment.
It is an environment where thoughtful medicine comes before unnecessary intervention, where communication is valued and where compassion is never overlooked.
That is exactly the kind of practice I wanted to be part of.
Looking Forward
Choosing a fertility specialist is an important decision, and I understand that many people arrive feeling uncertain about what lies ahead.
My advice is always the same: seek understanding before treatment.
Ask questions. Take the time to understand your options and choose a doctor who listens carefully, communicates openly and develops a plan that reflects your individual needs.
Every family begins with hope, and it is a privilege to share that journey with my patients. Whether you are exploring your fertility, considering treatment or preparing to welcome a baby, my commitment is to provide thoughtful, evidence-based care with honesty, compassion and respect every step of the way.
