Thirty Years in Fertility Care: What Has Changed and What Still Matters Most

By Dr Lynn Burmeister

When I first entered reproductive medicine more than 30 years ago, fertility care looked very different from what it does today.

IVF was still evolving, treatment options were more limited, and many of the technologies we now consider routine simply did not exist. Patients often had fewer choices and far less information available to them.

Over the decades, I have had the privilege of witnessing extraordinary advances in reproductive medicine. Scientific innovation has transformed fertility treatment, expanded the options available to patients and helped many people achieve outcomes that may not have been possible a generation ago.

Yet despite all these advances, the things that matter most to patients have changed very little.

Patients Are More Informed Than Ever

One of the biggest changes I have seen is the way patients engage with fertility care.

When I first started practising, most people relied almost entirely on conversations with their doctor for information. Today, patients often arrive having researched fertility treatment extensively through websites, podcasts, social media and online communities.

While access to information can be empowering, it can also be overwhelming. One of the most important parts of my role is helping patients understand which information is relevant to their individual circumstances and which options are suitable for them.

Every patient is different, and fertility care should never be reduced to a statistic, a social media post or a one-size-fits-all approach.

The Fertility Landscape Has Changed

The fertility sector has also evolved significantly over the past three decades.

Patients today have more choice than ever before when selecting a fertility clinic. Treatment options have expanded, clinics have grown and the way fertility services are delivered continues to evolve.

As a result, patients are increasingly asking important questions beyond treatment itself. They want to know who will be managing their care, how decisions are made, what support is available and whether they will feel understood throughout their fertility journey.

In my experience, these questions matter just as much as the treatment plan itself.

Why I Founded No.1 Fertility

After more than three decades working in reproductive medicine, I reached a point where I wanted to create a clinic that reflected the values I believed were most important.

When I founded No.1 Fertility in 2018, my goal was to build a clinic centred on clinical leadership, collaboration and patient care.

I wanted to create an environment where fertility specialists, embryologists, nurses and scientists worked closely together, where decisions were guided by evidence and experience, and where patients felt informed, supported and respected throughout treatment.

Most importantly, I wanted to build a clinic where individual patient circumstances remained at the centre of every decision.

Building a Team Around Shared Values

One of the things I am most proud of today is the team that has grown around that vision.

Over the years, we have been fortunate to attract highly experienced fertility specialists who share a commitment to evidence-based medicine and patient-centred care. Together, they bring expertise across IVF, fertility preservation, endometriosis, reproductive surgery, reproductive genetics, male fertility and complex fertility care.

Fertility medicine is ultimately a team effort. Successful treatment relies on collaboration between doctors, embryologists, nurses, scientists and support staff, all working towards the same goal.

That culture of collaboration remains one of the defining characteristics of No.1 Fertility.

Making High Quality Fertility Care Accessible

Another important goal when establishing No.1 Fertility was to provide high quality fertility care while remaining mindful of the financial pressures many patients face.

Fertility treatment can represent one of the most significant emotional and financial commitments a person or couple will ever make.

From the beginning, we have focused on investing in the areas that matter most to patient care: experienced specialists, scientific expertise, laboratory quality, nursing support and patient services.

At the same time, we have worked hard to remain conscious of affordability and value because we believe patients deserve transparency, honesty and confidence in the care they receive.

What Still Matters Most

Despite all the advances in fertility medicine, the fundamentals have not changed.

Patients still want honest advice.

They want clear communication.

They want to understand their options.

Most importantly, they want to feel supported throughout what can be one of the most important journeys of their lives.

Technology will continue to evolve and fertility treatment will continue to advance. But in my view, the future of fertility care should never lose sight of the human side of medicine.

After more than thirty years in reproductive medicine, I remain as passionate about helping patients build their families as I was when I first started. That commitment was the reason I founded No.1 Fertility, and it continues to guide everything we do today.
