PCOS Awareness Month : Shining a Light on Women’s Health

A few words from Dr Lynn Burmeister

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common hormonal conditions affecting people with ovaries, yet it often remains underdiagnosed, misunderstood, and sometimes dismissed. At No.1 Fertility, PCOS Awareness Month is an important opportunity to raise awareness, educate, and empower all patients—including transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) people—to seek the reproductive health support they deserve.

What is PCOS?

PCOS affects up to 1 in 10 people of reproductive age with ovaries, though some estimates suggest it may be higher. It is a complex condition linked to hormonal imbalances and ovarian function. People with PCOS may experience irregular or absent periods, multiple small follicles on the ovaries, and elevated androgen levels.

Common symptoms include:

  • Irregular or absent menstrual cycles
  • Acne, excess hair growth, or hair thinning
  • Weight changes or difficulty losing weight
  • Fertility challenges or difficulty conceiving
  • Mood changes, anxiety, or depression

No two patients experience PCOS the same way, which is why a personalised and patient-centred approach to care is essential. For those seeking guidance, inclusive PCOS support and reproductive health care can make a meaningful difference.

Inflammation and Insulin Resistance in PCOS

A key driver of PCOS symptoms is insulin resistance—where the body’s cells don’t respond properly to insulin. This can disrupt hormone balance and increase androgen production.

Insulin resistance is also linked to chronic low-grade inflammation, which can worsen symptoms like weight changes, irregular cycles, and fertility challenges. Over time, it may increase the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and other metabolic conditions.

Managing PCOS: Metformin and Inositol

While lifestyle measures such as nutrition, exercise, and stress reduction are foundational to managing PCOS, some treatments can target insulin resistance and inflammation directly:

  • Metformin: Improves the body’s response to insulin, helping regulate cycles, lower androgen levels, and support ovulation.
  • Inositol (myo-inositol and D-chiro inositol): A naturally occurring vitamin-like substance that can improve insulin sensitivity, restore ovulation, and support egg quality. Often used alongside or instead of metformin.

Fertility and PCOS

PCOS is a leading cause of fertility challenges, but with the right care, many people with PCOS can conceive. At No.1 Fertility, we offer:

  • Ovulation induction treatments
  • Tailored IVF and egg freezing programs
  • Holistic support including nutrition, lifestyle guidance, and counselling

By offering inclusive reproductive health services, we aim to support TGD patients as well as those navigating fertility challenges related to PCOS.

At No.1 Fertility, we integrate these approaches into individualised plans, combining medical therapy with lifestyle support to help all patients improve symptoms and achieve their fertility goals.
