Intrauterine insemination (IUI), also known as artificial insemination (AI), is a fertility treatment that may be recommended for people who have difficulties with intercourse, unexplained infertility, or mild sperm abnormalities. It is designed to help increase the chances of conception by placing washed sperm directly inside the uterus around the time of ovulation.
During IUI, a small catheter is used to transfer prepared sperm to the top of the uterus, at the time fertility monitoring suggests egg release is likely. In the laboratory, the sperm sample is “washed” and concentrated so that the final preparation contains a higher number of better‑quality sperm. This helps maximise the number of sperm that can reach the egg.
The procedure itself is relatively quick and is performed by a No.1 Fertility Specialist in the clinic. Some people experience mild cramping during or shortly after the treatment, but serious discomfort or complications are uncommon.
